Electric Ballast
You may not realize it, but electric ballasts are in almost any commercial fixture. They can be found in an outdoor flood lamps, in an indoor garden, on the street, or somewhere around your home. This type of lighting has many great things to offer! They are extremely energy efficient. They can produce a wide, powerful light. They also can last for an extremely long time. Sometimes however, even these great lighting solutions need replacement parts. It’s important to know exactly when and how to replace the parts to protect your investment. These parts, while they are long lasting, cannot last forever. In a High Pressured Sodium lighting system, the part that usually needs replacing will be the ballast itself.
When your lighting system begins to go downwards, you should be able to see it happening. The ballast provides your system with strong light, and an added perk is usually a very strong and consistent stream of light. When your lights begin to have a wavering or flickering stream, this would be a good indication that the ballast is beginning to fail. First you can try replacing the light bulb itself. If the replacement bulb does not solve the problem, then it is time to turn to replacing other parts, namely the ballast. To replace your ballast you will need to purchase a High Pressured Sodium Ballast kit. Luckily these lighting kits can easily be purchased on the web or in many stores. The kits come with instructions and can be easily installed yourself. Make sure that you check the amount of power your lighting system uses (the wattage) before you select a lamp. There are many kinds of HPS lighting systems, and you want to make sure that you are purchasing replacements for the correct system. Most standard lights use a 120 volts, but some may vary.
Go ahead and install your ballast transformer, using the kit, and following the instructions. Usually this installation will solve the problem of your flickering light. After you have installing, it is time to test it to make sure you have purchased the correct part, and that all will be going smoothly. Once you turn the hps lighting system on, it will begin to glow. If for some reason it does not glow, turn it off ,wait five minutes and try it one more time. Most likely if nothing happens, you have not assembled the ballast correctly and you should re check it. Be very of electrical hazards during the process.
These lighting systems are easily found, installed and replaced. Keep a watch on your lights and know the signs you may be needing replacement lighting transformer. If you do this, you will be able to keep your lighting systems running smoothly and have a great working HPS lighting system to light your home or your garden for many years to come.
