High pressure sodium (HPS) lamps do contain mercury. They produce a dark pink glow when first ignited, and reach a pinkish orange light when the are fully lit. A few bulbs will produce a pure to bluish white light when warming up. This will be from the mercury when the lamp is in mid-phase. The sodium elements is the main source of light from the HPS lamp, and it is put under extreme pressure to broadened the high sodium pressures in the lamp; because of this broadening and the output from mercury lamps, the colors of items under these light bulbs can be distinguished.

High pressure sodium light bulbs are very efficient. They mainly used for many streetlights and outdoor security lighting. Understanding the change in human spectrum vision sensitivity is needed for proper planning when designing lighting applications.

There is a lot of high chemical activity of the high pressure sodium arc tube, which is typically made of translucent aluminum oxide This HPS arc tube led GE call their high pressure sodium lamps "Lucalox".

High-pressure sodium lamps end of life will cycle and it is because a loss of sodium in the bulb. Sodium is very reactive element. HPS lamps can be ignited at a relatively low voltage but as they warm up it will cause the internal gas pressure within the bulb and increased voltage is needed to maintain the arc discharge. When the lamp gets older, the required voltage for the arc will exceed the output generated by the HPS ballast. The High Pressure Sodium lamp will heat up where the arc-tube fails and the light bulb will burn out.

Replacing a Circline Light Ballast

Changing out a circular fluorescent ballast is actually quite simple because the lamp socket is already attached. The items you will need is a philip screwdriver, ladder and a little patience.

Step 1. Turn the electricity off to the fixture. It is even better to turn it off at the circuit breaker.

Step 2. Carefully remove the fixture lens and bulb.

Step 3. Remove the fixture pan off the ceiling or wall and carefully un-connect the wires.

Step 4. Bring the fixture pan down and remove the light ballast screws on a stable flat surface. Take the new one and attach. Make sure the screws are tight (be careful not to strip the screws), this will eliminate humming

Step 5. Reverse the procedure and your fixture should be good as new.

All our T8 Ballasts come with Universal Voltage. This takes the guessing work on what voltage you need and limits the amount of inventory you need to carry. Also, our T8 Ballasts come with a 5 year warranty. Our F32T8 Ballast can operate a F17T8 as well as a F25T8 bulb.

Why are T8 Ballasts needed?

The mercury particles in the T8 fluorescent bulb must be ionized before the arc can operate within the tube. In T8 lamps, it does not take much voltage to start the arc in the lamp because the T8 Electronic Ballast works so efficiently.

How does a T8 Ballast work?

Our T8 Electronic ballasts operate instant start mode. Lower cost T8 Ballasts use only a simple oscillator. When the ballast power is turned on, the oscillator start to operate and the LC circuit charges up almost instantly. Then the voltage across the T8 lamp gets to about 1kv and the T8 lamp (i.e. F32T8 Bulb) ignites. These series of events are too fast to preheat the cathodes and the Electronic T8 lamp instant-operates in cold-cathode mode. These cathode filaments protect the Electronic T8 ballast from overheating if the bulb is burned out or does not ignite.

CFLs work best in open fixtures that allow airflow, such as table lamps, wall mounted sconces, pendants mounted fixtures and outdoor and landscape fixtures. For recessed fixtures it is almost always better to use a Reflector CFL, rather than a spiral CFL since the reflector will evenly distribute the light down.

WARNING: If a light fixture is connected to a Dimming CFL or 3-Way CFL luminary, you will need to use a CFL that is specifically designed to work in that application.

Choose a Spiral CFL that offers you a shade of white light that works best for you. For example, while most CFLs provide warm white light for your home, you could choose a cooler color for task lighting.

Why Pulse Start Metal Halide?
A change in the lamp and ballast construction allows pulse start metal halide bulbs to start using a high voltage igniter in the ballast instead of a starting electrode in the bulb. Changing Your Mercury Vapor Ballast

In the event that your light is bad or has stopped working, it must be replaced or you need to fix any defective parts. Changing these does not need to be a difficult or dangerous process if you follow the proper procedure. Using this rough guide to change most light ballasts and will help you to ensure your safety.

You will need: A ladder, a screwdriver (typically Phillips head, but check the fixture to be sure), your new light ballast.

1. Turn off the electricity to the light. This can be done by shutting off the breaker that your fixture is running off of. It is very important not to have any electricity connected to your fixture as it could result in serious injury.

2. Most fixtures have a protective electrical covering. You can usually remove this covering by simply removing the screws.

3. Carefully remove the bulb from the fixture and place them somewhere safe.

4. Remove the metal covering for the ballast.

5. Remove the wing-nuts connecting the hot wire and ground wire to separate the ballast wires from its' connection to the electricity.

6. Unscrew the old unit from its fixture and discard it.

7. Replace with your new one and screw it into place.

8. Connect the wires with the wing-nuts you removed earlier.

9. Replace the metal covering.

You are now ready to insert your light bulbs and restore power to the lights.

Replacing Mercury Vapor with a Metal Halide

Similar to other HID lighting, which also use ballasts, mercury vapor light ballast is a component which allows energy to go into the light and power it. They are an integral part of the light to which careful attention must be paid. This part of the bulb governs the amount of energy which flows into the light, preventing it from burning out due to too much energy overloading the light. However, the wrong type of ballast in a light bulb can be costly and consume more energy than you think.

The Energy Efficiency Act of 2005 prohibits the making or the sale of vapor lighting as of January 1, 2008. If your mercury light fails you will find it very difficult, but not impossible to get a replacement. Our ballast will operate a mercury vapor lamp and a mh lamp. So it will be easy to switch the the more efficient and whiter light of a metal halide bulb. Your best bet is to either use a metal halide system or abandon the old system completely and start with an energy efficient solution such as LED. The difference could mean saving money on your electricity bill, and consuming less energy with your lighting system.

Mercury vapor lamps will emit 50% less light every five years. While they will rarely burn out, the bulbs will become less effective while still using the same amount of energy. When your mercury vapor lamps begin to take a longer time to warm up or they do not emit any light even when the faint hum of electricity can be heard, it is a sure sign that your bulb or the light is on its way out.

Is LED Growing Lights Right for You?

A large number of successful gardeners consider getting an early start on the planting season by growing starters and seedlings indoors. For such eager gardeners grow LED growing lights provide affordable indoor growing advantages. Grow LED lighting has become much more affordable because of recent technological advancements and lights are now not solely used for commercial purposes. The everyday gardener can make a small scale investment of $50 to $60 in LED grow bulb technology in order to provide the right light for healthy plant starters in preparation for the planting season. In homes where the indoor lighting for house plants needs a boost, LED plant lights will also fill the gap with a low operating cost.

A $60-$150 investment is not much higher than the costs of traditional HPS grow systems but when take into consideration the fact that LED Hydroponic lights can last several years while most fluorescent and HID lights have to be changed every year or so when used continuously. This fact makes the choice of LED lights less expensive – the start up costs may be the same or higher, but the lights last much longer, giving you the head-start you need on the growing season year after year.

The otherwise high investment may also be seen in the light of energy savings made by gardeners who use LEDs to grow their plants. LED growing systems perform at a much greater efficiency than fluorescent lights such that the same (if not more) light is provided by a 90 watt LED light as compared to a 400 watt fluorescent light. That translates to 85 percent more efficiency from the LED light. This means savings in your electric bill, and of course, you’ll be helping to save the environment with a minimal carbon footprint.

The efficiency of LED plant lights is not their only strong point. They emit light in exactly the same frequency that is required by plants for photosynthesis which enables them to grow the healthiest. Also there is no waste with LED lights as it’s all absorbed by the plants; the plants getting all the benefits while you get healthier, bigger plants with more output.

Hydroponic LED lights do give you a great head start on the spring planting season as you’ll have heartier starters which will produce for you stronger plants. And this is all thanks to your LED grow lights – your running head start to the growing season.

When it comes to choosing your grow light systems depends on your level of commitment to indoor gardening comes into question. When your needs are limited to just growing a few starter plants as a means of saving towards planting in the spring, there will be no point spending heavily into the process. In that case, you could limit your use to simple HPS grow lights or other types of fluorescent lighting. But if you are planning a more elaborate operation which may include the planting of fresh vegetables that you can enjoy in the winter, or you are planning an extensive indoor garden, it would be more advisable to invest in LED plant lights. It should however be a conscious decision as you really must be committed to using the lights for years on end to make the investment worthwhile.

There is a clear difference between LED Plant lights and hps bulbs. For one, the efficiency of an LED plant lighting is considerably more than that of an HPS bulb – the same power of light that is generated by a 400 watt HPS bulbs will be had with only a 90 watt LED grow sytem. The power-to-area ratio is also significantly increased when using LED lights as you are able to cover a 12 foot area of plants with the power you would use to run a small appliance. Again, LED lights are your green option with a minimal carbon footprint, having little or no effect on the environment.

If you are planning your indoor growing beyond one or two years, LEDs are the way to go as they last up to 10 to 20 times longer than HID lamps which need to be replaced virtually every year. Your extra investment in LED growing would pay for itself after just a few years, making your savings noticeable.

It will however not be worth the investment in LED grow lights if your indoor growing plans are not so elaborate. In this case, spending $50 to $500 when you are probably buying just a few greenhouse starters would not be worth the money. It will be much more economical in this instance to use HPS lamps and they would work just as well.

When you are making the decision on which grow lights to buy, you need to consider all the variables. Will you be committed to growing your food, enjoying fresh vegetables throughout the year at a fixed investment for several years, saving over what you spend at the grocery store every week?

Digital Ballasts vs. Magnetic Ballasts

HID grow lights work exceptionally well for indoor garden applications. Not only do HID lamps produce light that mimics sunlight more closely than light produced by other light bulbs, but it does so using less energy and in a manner that extends the life of the bulb.

Digital light ballasts offer several advantages that magnetic ballasts do not. HPS and Metal Halide are vital for growing your plants. HPS will promote flowering and budding and Metal Halide will promote growth. A Digital ballast can operate both a HPS lamp and a Metal Halide Lamp. This will save money because you do not have to purchase two separate grow ballasts. They weigh less than their comparable counterpart, you need to consider this when hanging multiple grow systems. Digital Electronic Ballasts also operate silently while traditional systems may hum and make vibrating sounds. These grow ballasts use less energy which saves money on your electric bill. HID Digital versions of ballasts have a quicker start up time and are smaller in size.

More Light

Digital electronic remote ballasts allows the HID bulb to put out up to 30% percent more light, yet will operate on the same amount of electricity. They are also safer than Magnetic remote because they their circuitry cuts off the unit in dangerous situations. These units also emit less heat, thereby decreasing the chance of an accident.

A digital combination electronic ballast circuitry conforms to optimal performance for each individual HID lamp, while Core & Coil HID units do not. With a digital ballast, the light emitted is more consistent.
