A 400 Watt power inverter is a product that converts DC current to AC current. DC is direct current, which is normally produced by batteries. AC is means alternating current and is the type of electric that is provided by the Utility company to your home. The Importance of Replacing Mercury Vapor Lamps

How do Mercury Vapor Light Bulbs Work?

Mercury vapor bulbs are widely found in home security or outdoor lighting application such as garage or parking area lights. Many arenas, stadiums, gymnasiums, stages and auditoriums use them also. These are gas-discharge bulbs that use mercury in an excited state to produce the light we see. They tend to last longer than most high or low pressure bulbs and emit a particularly intense light, making them a great choice for an outdoor night time lighting application. Typically the bulbs may be clear or coated with a thin layer of phosphor. Phosphor coating provides the best color rendition throughout testing and practical application.

Using any Mercury Vapor light means that you will require auxiliary components such as a ballast. A Mercury Vapor ballast regulates the amount of energy that flows into the light. When an excess of energy is allowed to enter a bulb that is what causes lights to burn out. Similar ballasts are also found in fluorescent lights. Also like fluorescent lights, a mercury vapor light requires a starter. When this type of light is first turned on it will glow faintly at first as the main arc is not yet lit and the gas pressure, two essential parts of the light production, is still very low. The gas pressure causes ultraviolet mercury emission bands which produce the light we see.

MV lights are also very closely related to metal halide lamps which use mercury in a more complex application. Most types of lamps are required to have features which prevent the UV radiation they generate from escaping. The disadvantage to these lights is that they are not very energy efficient, which is one of the most vital factors in selecting electrical devices today. Because of the high energy consumption of these devices, many people are considering changing up their lighting applications. Unfortunately some bulbs are defective or simply die after time. Mercury vapor bulbs will rarely burn out completely. A bulb usually produces 50% less light every five years. This can be affected and the depreciation rate increased by a number of factors including a bad circuit wiring or a faulty ballast.

Another factor is that these lights is the safety hazard involved with the UV emissions that could result if the lamp is damaged. The exposure from the raw UV from these lamps is enough to cause damage to the lens of a human eye. Some cases of lights that were damaged in gymnasiums involved people getting sunburn from the bulbs.

Due to the vast energy usage of these lamps the sale and production of them has stopped. Once your bulbs go, it is wise to either switch to a metal halide solution or use an energy efficient light like LED.

If your MV bulbs are buzzing more loudly than they previously did, this can be a sure sign that you need to replace the bulbs. Another symptom of a faulty bulb is flickering. If the bulb flickers between bright and dim after its' normal warm-up time (about 2 - 3 minutes) it may be time to replace the bulb.

Please remember, if you decide to replace your mercury vapor bulbs it will likely require you to use a ladder. You should always have someone with you when you are working with electricity or working with a ladder.
