    ANSI Code

    Saturday, February 7th, 2009

It is a particular code that describes what type and the electrical characteristics of the HID bulb and HID ballast. Example: HPS Bulb. The code is assigned by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). It was developed to help in matching the HID Bulb to the correct HID Ballast. ANSI codes are for the following [...]

    Arc Length

    Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Arc Length is the total (MOL) dimension of the Arc Discharge measured from the bottom of the electrode to the top of the electrode in a light bulb. This is helpful for optical designs and performance of fixtures.

    Ballast Efficacy Factor (BEF)

    Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Ballast Factor is measured by a certain bulb ballast to produce light from the bulbs it operates. BF is determined by dividing the lumen output of the bulb ballast combination by the total lumen output of the same light bulbs on a reference ballast. Ballast Factor is a whole number that is divided by the [...]

    Beam Spread – Angle

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

The Beam spread is the angle between two directions for which the intensity of at least 50% is obtained to the maximum intensity (i.e Halogen Bulbs) of the light bulb as measured in a plane through the nominal beam center line.

    Bulb Ballast

    Saturday, February 7th, 2009

A Bulb Ballast (i.e. HPS Ballast) is used with an electric discharge light bulb to ensure the correct voltage, current and waveform for staring and operating the bulb. (i.e. HPS Bulb). All HID and fluorescent bulbs need a ballast to operate. Ballasts have two primary functions: Starting the Bulb. Control the operation of  bulb once [...]

    Electronic Ballast

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

A High Frequency Electronic Ballast operates above 20,000 Hz. Maximum efficiency is achieved trough the use of electronic circuitry and desirable lamp operation. (i.e. T8 Ballasts). These ballast are a lot more efficient than Magnetic Ballast.

    Hybrid Ballast

    Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Hybrid is a type of ballast that is low frequency electronic or in other words is a magnetic ballast with some electronic parts that switch the voltage off to the ballast coil once the light bulb is up and running. A small increase in efficiency happens via more expensive materials (magnetic coil) and there is [...]

Kelvin Temperature of a Light Bulb

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

Kelvin is the “color temperature” of the light bulb. Kelvin scale comparative values of light sources. Here is a list gives you an idea of where some light sources are relative to one another on the Kelvin scale. Candlelight = 1,850K High Pressure Sodium = 2,000K Regular Incandescent Bulb = 2,750K Warm Fluorescent Bulb = [...]

    Light Bulb

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

A Light Bulb is a Hard,Quartz or Soft glass enclosure that may contain a vacuum of an inert glass or metal. These are the means of light generation via filament or electrodes. Incandescent light bulbs are gradually being replaced by law in many applications by CFL Bulbs, HPS Lamps, Metal Halide Lamps, LED Bulbs, and [...]

    Light Bulb Base

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

The bulb base mechanically keeps the lamp mechanically in place in the desired application. The light bulb base directly or indirectly conducts electricity from the inner circuits to the lamp itself. (i.e. Metal Halide Bulb). They can help with heat dissipation which will mean longer lamp life. Lamp bases need to be operated within a [...]

    Magnetic Ballast

    Sunday, February 8th, 2009

An inefficient ballast(i.e. Mercury Vapor Ballast) that uses copper in a core and coil design assembly transformer that performs the minimum functions required to start and operate the light bulb.
